Deciding Which Pool Enclosure is Right for You?

November 27, 2024 by Philip Kessler

If you get your pool enclosure installed over the winter, your family will experience a new level of enjoyment when hitting the water from opening day on. Pool enclosures provide families with some seclusion that greatly enhances their time together. There are other benefits your family will enjoy from day one as well. Pool enclosures create a bug-free zone and they filter harmful UV rays, lessening their intensity. You won’t be cleaning the pool nearly as often either.

Unwanted guests—and we’re talking snakes, frogs, and other wildlife—won’t find their way into your pool only to perish because they couldn’t get out again. And speaking of keeping things out, that works for kids too. All you need to do is flip the lock on the door.

So, you’ve decided to install an enclosure and that’s great! But have you decided which type of pool enclosure would be the best option for you and your family?

Screen enclosures

Mesh screen enclosures are our personal preference, of course. If you’re installing a screen enclosure, you should choose mesh over metal. The salt air erodes the metal and rust and decay set in pretty quickly meaning you will have lots of repairs and replacements in the future. Mesh screens are far more durable.

Mesh screens allow air to flow freely throughout your structure meaning that every nook and cranny dries out after the pool has been used. Besides the fact that you and your family will catch every breeze coming your way—a big plus living here in Florida—free airflow is your best defense against mold and mildew. Once that stuff gets started it spreads and left unchecked, creates health problems for both humans and pets.

One last push for screen enclosures? Did you know that some companies—like ours, for instance—can customize the screens? Images are printed directly onto the screens using dyes treated with added UV protection so colors are guaranteed to remain vibrant for years. It truly is a remarkable change to your environment, allowing you to create a backyard getaway spot your family is sure to love!

Retractable enclosures

If you’re looking for a versatile pool enclosure, a retractable enclosure could be the way to go. Depending on your preference, they can be opened or closed while using the pool. It gives you the flexibility of enjoying an open-air pool on bright sunny days and allows you to swim on less-than-perfect days too.

Usually constructed of aluminum framing and polycarbonate walls, they are lightweight and easy to manage. The structures decrease in height so the individual sections easily fit inside one another.

Dome enclosures

You might have figured out that dome-style pool enclosures get their name from the curved or dome-shaped roofs. Their aesthetically pleasing design creates an overall atmosphere of elegance. Their spacious feel guards against claustrophobia which some people suffer when inside an enclosed space. The shape of the structure can be enclosed using screen, glass, or polycarbonate.

All allow natural light to flow through them, but only screen walls and ceilings give you free airflow.

Still undecided?

As with any home addition, you should take time to decide about your new enclosure’s design. The overall aesthetics it can provide to your home is worth careful consideration because it will affect your home’s value. Materials used, the structure shape, and functionality will increase your property value to some extent. Even if you aren’t planning to put your home up for sale, that might not always be the case. Getting the most bang for your buck is always the best action plan.

Let’s recap

Pool enclosures act as a security barrier preventing unauthorized access by children or pets. That reduces the risk of accidents. We already mentioned the wildlife factor. Fishing lifeless bodies out of the pool is a task we know you won’t mind never having to deal with again.

Your swimming season is automatically extended because rainy days aren’t a wash. You gain a degree of UV protection on those brilliantly sunny days too. That means you aren’t pulling the kids out of the water as often to reapply the sunscreen. Woo hoo!

Pool enclosures minimize water evaporation lowering the need for chemical treatments. They keep yard debris and bugs out of the water leaving you have more time for swimming or sunning. Moreover, your pool enclosure provides a secluded space for swimming or—perhaps, more importantly—sunning beside the pool. Neighbors are great but sometimes, it’s nice to be alone with your family or, for that matter, just your thoughts. Are we right?

Another plus? Your pool enclosure allows your outdoor space to become a multipurpose area. And, hey, a study pool cover puts an entirely new spin on that thought, yeah? However you choose to use the space, bugs won’t put a damper on your plans because they won’t get inside.

Pool enclosures are popular home additions in Florida. They increase your home’s market value because buyers consider them a plus. It’s as if there’s another room in the house. One that’s sure to be used often by all. That means a prime spot for making memories that will last a lifetime.

And, not to wax philosophical here, but the world is pretty crazy right now. Time spent together strengthens the family bond like nothing else. A firm foundation on which to stand makes a difference in how you allow life to treat you. Pull your family in close whenever possible and build on that firm foundation. You won’t ever regret it—no matter what’s happening in the world around you.
