5 Gazebo Additions for an Amazing Outdoor ExperienceApril 3, 2016 by Philip Kessler | Be the first to comment »
Although gazebos are always a smart addition–providing shade on a hot summer day, giving you a bit of privacy, and increasing your property value–you’ll get the most out of your gazebo if you add features to make it an extension of your living space.
These five additions, for example, can turn your gazebo into a plush place to relax and get away from it all!
What could be more inviting than a place where you can sit around the fire, toasting marshmallows and/or enjoying a glass of wine? Adding a fireplace to your gazebo is a sure-fire (hah!) way to add a touch of luxury you and your family will enjoy for years. Imagine a masonry fireplace built of stone that matches the floor pavers in your gazebo. If you don’t want to build, you can buy a natural-looking gazebo fireplace complete with mantel and chimney. Free-standing steel fireplaces offer another option and come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors.
Adding an outdoor television to your gazebo really does turn it into an extension of your living space, suitable for movie nights and big-game viewing. Your best bet is to spend the extra cash for a genuine outdoor TV, because they’re sealed against heat, snow, rain, etc., but designed to let the excess heat they generate escape. These TVs come in a wide range of sizes, so there’s bound to be one to fit your gazebo. Oh, and LCD TVs tend to provide the best picture outdoors.
Music is always a great addition, and some gazebos come wired for sound. If yours didn’t come wired, but you’d like it to be, you’ve got a couple of choices. Adding a sound system is easy if a gazebo has its own electricity; you simply choose your outdoor system and mount speakers on the uprights. No electricity in your gazebo? Never fear, you won’t have to run an extension cord from the house! Install high-quality wireless Bluetooth speakers and pair them with your laptop or MP3 player!
Now, this is luxury! Installing a hot tub in or next to your gazebo transforms it from a quaint backyard structure into a posh spa. Go Asian with a small hot tub sunk in the center of your gazebo’s wooden floor, or contemporary and cozy with a freestanding teacup hot tub. You can turn the entire gazebo into a spa by installing the biggest hot tub that will fit under the pergola and putting benches around the edges.
Nothing says “atmosphere” quite like the right lighting. Once again, the type you choose depends on whether your gazebo is wired for electricity. If it is, you can pretty much install any lighting you want, up to and including dimmable chandeliers dripping crystals, unobtrusive accent lights tucked in the corners, or vintage Tiffany lamps. Luckily, lighting has come a long way since Edison, so even unwired gazebos can sport specialty lights. Chandeliers, lanterns, up lights, and fairy lights now come solar powered.
