Nosy Neighbors? Lanai Privacy Ideas

October 28, 2022 by Philip Kessler

Hopefully, your neighbor isn’t the reason you clicked in to check out our lanai privacy ideas. Having a neighbor who keeps a watchful eye on your yard seemingly every time your family is outdoors would tend to get a bit annoying—maybe even stressful, depending on the accompanying vibe. Nosy neighbor or not, it would be nice to have a secluded outdoor space when enjoying time outdoors with family and friends.

Today might be your lucky day because you might discover that one of these lanai privacy ideas is perfect for your outdoor living space.

The shutter effect

Create a vertical wonder just outside your back door by building a wall that stands high above the patio using vertical planks. Each plank is placed at an angle a short distance from the last to create a shutter effect. The wall provides the illusion of privacy without completely closing you in.

A woven branch screen

Do-it-yourselfers might tackle this project by first building the screen frame. Determine the dimensions of your screen before you begin building. It might be useful to draw a diagram of your design as well. Will you use sticks or vines to weave the screen? You could also place similarly sized sticks—or incorporate a staggered size design—horizontally atop one another.

Either way, your simple wall can be portable or stationary. They’re perfect for a garden environment, but anyone who wants to add a “woodsy” element to their backyard will be quite happy with the end result.

Drop cloth curtains are a quick fix

It may seem like a “quickest means to an end” approach, but believe it or not, using drop cloths to create tie-back curtains around the border of your lanai creates quite a dramatic effect. It’s a relatively inexpensive way to enclose your space. You can leave them down and surround your lanai in privacy or synch them up to let the air circulate. You might consider purchasing some material paint and designing a family “brand” or some other design.

Air circulation is an important factor when creating an outdoor living area in Florida. The humid climate is perfect for promoting mold and mildew growth. Left untreated, it can affect your family’s health. Pets aren’t immune to the ill effects of mold either.

It’s a good time to note that drop cloths are made of heavy material and would certainly block free airflow. It’s a good idea to have a way to circulate air. Can a ceiling fan be installed perhaps? It will keep the air moving and add to the overall ambience as well.

Hedges work well

Of course, it will take a while for your hedge to grow into a wall of privacy, but time flies. Before you know it, your lanai could be surrounded by a wall of lush greenery. However, there could be a down side—it might attract bugs.

Privacy screen enclosure

We believe we saved the best of our lanai privacy ideas for last. Installing a screen enclosure offers you a number of advantages.

They include:

  • Enhanced privacy—It’s the number one reason that people choose to install screen enclosures.
  • Bug blocker—Store away the tiki torches and bug repellant because bugs aren’t getting through the screen.
  • UV protection—Screen enclosures don’t completely block the sun, but every bit of shade is good around here. Are we right?
  • Free airflow—Catching every wisp of a breeze is every bit as important as the shade!

Another advantage to consider is that some companies, such as ours, for instance, offer their customers a customization feature. The customer chooses a digital image, either from their own library or a company catalog, and the image is reproduced directly onto the privacy screen. The image is printed using dyes that are treated with UV protection to fight sun fade. The images remain vibrant for years to come.

Your new enclosure will not disappoint! The results are truly amazing. It will completely transform your space. The decor you choose can easily add to the surroundings. Imagine stepping out your backdoor and into your very own private getaway!

You can relive your favorite vacation, surround yourself with a luxurious tropical garden, or practically live at the beach. The possibilities are endless!

Rest and relaxation

Life moves fast.

Keeping up with everyone’s schedule—especially once the kids reach the “extra-curricular everything” stage—can leave precious little time for a little “R and R.” Don’t hang on by your fingernails until it’s finally time to get away on a vacation. Create your own family retreat using any of the lanai privacy ideas above. Or, use them as a jumping-off place and run with an idea of your own.

You won’t regret gaining an added sense of privacy, whether or not the neighbors are looking on. As a matter of fact, your new space is likely to become one of the most favorite gathering spots in the house!
