We’ve Got the Skinny on Pool Skimming

March 7, 2024 by Philip Kessler

We’re about to get our hour of sunlight back and the temperatures are on the rise! It won’t be long before pool season is in full swing here in Florida. That’s going to feel especially good this year for a lot of us! If this past winter’s abnormally low temperatures left you appreciating our sub-tropical weather even more, skimming the pool nearly every day might not seem as big a deal this year.

That’s going to be true even while keeping it free of everything that the kids drag into the water on their feet, right? It’s hard not to come running toward the pool at warp speed intent upon diving headlong into the water from any direction. Especially, when running for your life from whatever obvious horror is bearing down on you at the moment! We know you get where they’re coming from—

But still, if they were the ones that were fishing after the bits of grass or sucking the accumulating dirt and other yard debris from the bottom of the pool way more regularly than you’d like, they’d be more apt to use the foot basin you have sitting near the ladder.

Skimming is overrated

There’s no doubt that the skimmer was a brilliant invention! Running the net slowly over the water’s surface to collect the floating debris before it has a chance to sink to the bottom makes it far less likely you’ll walk out one day to cloudy water. And if you don’t catch that sign early, things can go from bad to worse pretty quickly.

If you have a pool, you know exactly what we mean.

Still, what if we told you there was a simple fix to eliminating nearly 100% of the yard debris that your kids drag into the pool on the regular?

Are you ready?

Install a pool enclosure. It will give your kids enough pause to slow their role making a huge difference in the amount of time necessary to keep the pool clean. Keep your foot basin at the edge of the pool by all means! We wouldn’t even be above posting a reminder to “Wash Your Feet” between the door of your enclosure and the pool’s edge!

Having the pool enclosed helps reign in the urge to be in and out as much too.

Other benefits to enjoy

When you enclose your pool, you and your family will immediately notice what a positive impact your new enclosure has on pool time! In addition to spending less time cleaning and more time relaxing poolside or playing in the water with the kids, there are additional benefits you’ll immediately notice.

Increased privacy

Mesh screen enclosures add an element of privacy that is undeniable! Many homeowners have stated that if they had known the impact that enclosing their pools would have on their ability to truly relax, they would have done it sooner! The feeling of “being on display” becomes non-existent and the noise pollution fades into the background as well.

Moreover, you may want to take the privacy factor up a notch. Work with a company, like ours for instance, that offers a customization feature. Digital imagery, either from the company catalog or your library, recreates the images directly on your screens in vibrant colors. Dyes treated with added ultraviolet (UV) protection ensure that the images resist sun fade for years to come.

The results are sure to amaze you. After adding your personal touch with furnishings, lighting, and other decor, your family and friends will look forward to hanging out in your private backyard getaway as often as possible!

Bugs aren’t invited

Mesh screen enclosures are constructed with a finely woven mesh screen that eliminates the possibility of bugs and insects making their way through. That’s all bugs, noseeums included. Imagine not having to swat away flies when you’re dining out by the water’s edge. And, what about inviting everyone over for a night swim without having to encircle the area with citronella tiki torches and keeping the insect repellant at hand to spray your guests down as they exit the water?

UV protection for you too

We already mentioned that the dyes used to print custom imaging are treated with added UV protection. Moreover, the enclosure itself adds a varied degree of UV protection for your family too.

Living in the Sunshine State, we know how intense the summer sun can be. Installing a mesh screen enclosure filters the dangerous UV rays which means you have added protection.

Safety features too

Owning a pool is a huge responsibility. Fencing in the area—or the entire yard—provides homeowners with protection against the dangers of someone, or something, falling into the water and not being able to get out. Enclosing your pool affords you with a stronger degree of protection. You can simply lock the door when you don’t want anyone to have access to the area.

We can take that a step further too. Mesh screen enclosures provide a healthier environment than glass enclosures. That’s because mesh enclosures allow air to flow freely throughout the structure 24/7. This, in turn, guards against mold and mildew getting a foothold nearby.

Mold continues to spread when given an environment to do so and the hot, humid weather that prevails in Florida provides prime living conditions. Glass enclosures increase the odds of that happening because air is trapped inside and becomes stagnant. Continued exposure to mold, which is ingested by breathing in the spores that float freely in the air, causes health problems that grow worse over time.

Free airflow, which mesh screen enclosures naturally provide, decreases the risk of mold or mildew taking hold because the entire pool area can dry out entirely.

Won’t take you to the cleaners

When you consider all the benefits that mesh screen enclosures provide you and your family, it makes the cost of installing one much more affordable. Seriously. The bug-free zone alone could easily justify the expense when you consider the number of times they’ve driven you indoors.

Are we right?

Another major benefit is the elevated level of privacy. Pool enclosures don’t just shield you from feeling “under a microscope” on those days when it seems everyone is outdoors. The “out of sight, out of mind” philosophy works both ways. Neighbors are going to be more likely to completely disregard what’s going on at your house as well.

Pool season is right around the corner. Make this a summer your family will never forget! Simply by enclosing the pool.
